I would think that the meaning of the word could be figured out by using context clues in the text. Have you tried that? Children's authors usually don't use words that can't be figured out if you pay attention to the context of which the word is being used and the theme of the story.

Shark beneath the Reef is the name of the book.....and yes it was easy to figure out what they were talking about...and the 11 year old got it as well....however what I found ODD was that none of us could find a definition in any dictionary. I even checked the Spanish Dictionary as there is a lot of spanish influence in the book.
