There are no "rules" for how to spend these checks. It's your money. Do with it as you please. You don't think you deserve it? It's a great opportunity for donating to charities. Give it away to loved ones. You can send the money to the Treasury Department's Bureau of the Public Debt. I'm not getting the guilt here. No one says you need to keep it.

That said, there are many small businesses around the area that could easily benefit from people spending this money there. That's helping the local economy. That's helping local employees.

By the way, there are many places in this country where $150K in income (couples) is far from being wealthy. Try living around the NY metro area on that income. Don't even ask about the San Francisco area. If you're single and making up to $75K in NYC, good luck with your living arrangements.
