Like all places, they have to respond to the market. There is more competition for selling housing in Florida and the competition is lowering prices so they have to do the same.
I saw recently on TV (way up here in NH) that Ginn Reunion Resort in Orlando was advertising a $40,000 reduction in price on their housing (I think they are condos but it just shows what the housing market is like). I had never seen ads like that before- of course 2 weeks later I read that there was a big auction of Ginn properties so that shows how bad the market is.
Developers are realizing that baby boomers are starting to look for places to retire so they are trying to capture as much of that market as they can and price is one sure way to attact people. While price should not be the only consideration, sellers know it is a way to get people's attention.
