They've been doing it at our local Costco (Seattle Area) for over a month now.
They also have an area designated with disinfected carts. They only allow about 40 people in the store at a time. Five out, five in..
The cashier touches nothing if at all possible. Gun scan your card. Gun scan the items in your cart if possible. Customer rotates items to facilitate gun scanning. If the conveyor does get used it gets disinfected between customers. Even with only 40 customers in the store they still have 5 registers open.
A reader board outside displaying in/out of stock status on popular items. If it's out of stock no need standing in line outside.
Several employees directing the traffic flow and wiping things down. All wearing masks and gloves.
A lot of effort but worth it. I wish Home Depot and Lowes would come even close to such effort. Both of those places have been a zoo..
