My approach to diet is 1) I can’t go hungry, 2) I have to have delicious food. Otherwise, I will not stay on the diet (I learned that from many tries in the past). So I do both portion (calorie) control and low carbohydrates... not too low carbs as in Keto, or too fast loss at a time because at our age what will happen is: loose skin, hair loss and a lower immunity system.
I don't want to look pretty for the coffin. So health is first.
I also keep a journal like Fitday on my iPad and start every morning stepping on a scale. It becomes a habit, like brushing your teeth.
Personally, I keep in the higher but normal weight range, my face likes it best. Also as a portrait artist sometimes, I find skeleton or zero size people are not attractive to me. That’s what cancer does for free.
My diet is mostly sea food, some meat (BBQed steak, lean burgers) and skinless chicken. Lots of steamed vegetables, almost no starch in any form. Berries and fruit for dessert. And I love my full fat yogurt and milk. The occasional glass of wine, or spirits. I celebrate all occasions anniversaries, birthdays eat the cake too... but with portion control, and calorie control. After a month or so you get really good at knowing your food calorie count by sight, and you won’t need to weigh the food you put in your mouth. Initially if it didn’t go on the food scale it didn’t go in my mouth! Same for drinks. Measured every ounce. After a month you don’t need to measure you will know your drinks’ calories by sight.
Result: I am happy and on this diet for life. My weight goes up and down 2 pounds at the most in the long run.
I don’t know if my diet would work for you. It is trial and error to see what you like to eat that keeps you healthy. But it’s worth finding out for yourself. Just thought I’d share. Good luck to you!
