Yes they let more light in (if you spend time in your garage).
It's just are hot inside the garage as the outside, so they don't keep the garage cooler in the hot periods.
When you don't have any, there's less expense.
Less chance of backing into a screen, (garage doors are easier to see).

In the spring fall/winter, we like to open the house door to the garage, and on the opposite side of the house we will open up our sliders to our screened in lanai. We get a great breeze flowing through!
