China, South Korea, and South American countries were some of the biggest suppliers of these guns. Now whether the governments of these countries were knowledgeable of it is left up to conjecture.
The M16 rifles in the hands of the cartels were from Mexican army deserters who took their assigned rifle with them and joined the cartels.
AGAIN, if there is a demand someone will fill that demand. The cartels needed guns and criminal organizations filled that need.
The FBI lists more deaths by hammers and clubs than by rifles of all types. Back in the early 2000's if I remember correctly and I believe it was in Baltimore the mayor had a media dog and pony show on weapons used in crimes. They claimed that the AK was the weapon of choice in killings. The only problem they had was that they had no confiscated AK rifles used in a shooting to put on display, they had to go to a gun shop and borrow one for the show. There had been no shootings with an AK.

Those guns look scary, by design. That’s what makes them an easy target (get it?

)It’s just a tool. It’s not any more lethal than lots of other guns are.
Before cell phones, a phone cord was often used as a lethal weapon yet no one feared them.
Guns don’t kill. People do. If you outlaw guns, only the outlaws will have them (ask anyone in Chicago)
