I think that some folks like to believe that the NRA is the boogieman, but that is more likely just due to ignorance. I support the NRA even though I am not a member. They have done a lot of good. They have improved gun safety in schools and proficiency in law enforcement.
The only background check required on a federal level is the NICS: National Instant Criminal (background check) System. This was originally presented as the Brady Bill, and was lobbied HEAVILY against by - your pals at the NRA. They spent millions to defeat it and succeeded in limiting its functionality.

The NRA is no friend to defense. They exist to push guns, period. They don't care who owns them. They used to. But they stopped caring decades ago and are now nothing more than a lobby for the gun manufacturing industry.
