It is always better to be safe than sorry. I believe that more than half of all Villagers have guns and almost all who have them, know how to use them. I am glad of that.
I would caution that "I am glad that I am allowed to learn to shoot and buy a gun if I feel the need" will not help, for example, if you're confronted with intruders, armed or not, neither will security cameras, lights, etc. The only thing one can realistically depend upon is having a defensive weapon (gun) at the time its needed. Relying on the police (too little time to avert most disasters) or an armed neighbor may prove perilous to your longevity. Of course, knowing which end to point and being somewhat accurate is always beneficial
