My guess is you are going to have a little adjustment to make going to a new computer after 10 years. Vista, transfer of data etc will take some time. However I agree with Russ a laptop is the only way to go. Look at all mfg's since a lot of the componets come from a very limited number of suppliers.
I have a friend that just bought a 17" Acer for less than $700. We have Compaq and Toshiba. The Toshiba has some extra USB ports and a few extra controls that I like. The Compag was on sale for $429 last fall.
Might want to consider the smaller 15" if you are mobile and add a LCD display for home.
