It's analogous to the role Pravda played in soviet Russia, not long ago. The amazing thing is I used to observe the phenomenon when I was young and think, how sad that the Russian people are continually propagandized in this manner, never suspecting that one day, we would be subjected to far worse, i.e. from "all sides" at "all times". Some say that one significant difference is that the Russian people knew that they were being lied to.
