I've used air filters in the past and they never really did much for me...but that's me and like I said everyone is different. Listen to him. Maybe start with a pediatrician. There are more of them then there are pulmonologists here in this area. Perhaps he/she can send you to a nearby area for a pulmonologist. Please take it VERY seriously. Sending positive thoughts your way.
