Let's see they have been at it for over 40 years!!!!
I do believe there have been some economic turbulence over those years.
What they have now is critical mass of population. Sufficient to draw national concerns we have all come to appreciate.
It was not so long ago (pre South of 466) when there wasn't a national concern within a rifle shot of anywhere in TV.
They (TV) have established that if you build it they will come. Maybe at a slower rate one time VS another. I know developers who would give their left arm and other strategic parts of the body in return for one of TV's "slow" years.
The only thing that has changed (in my opinion) is timing.
