We made it... the trip went well with the cat and mother-in-law, who basically entertained and took care of the cat in the back seat. We found that south Texas isn't nearly as boring as the pan handle and we enjoyed all the different trees once we got to Louisiana. I took a zillion pictures crossing the Mississippi for the first time on the ground. We did get out of the car every few hours, mostly at McDonald's. I can't believe how many McD's there are on I10.
