I could have written your post. Our neighborhood is very quiet and probably, very Republican, but ones political preference is never discussed and we all get along really well. We had a new couple move into our very established small area this past year and immediately hung out their mile long streamers showing their political preference. We are all polite to them, but nobody actually engages them in conversation because you will never get away. I am sure it must be uncomfortable for them and they may not stay too long, but it is a problem that did not need to be.
