EXCELLENT analysis most would not think about. It "can" save a few people once in awhile to have an extended warranty, but on the whole as you pointed out, these are NOT developed for YOUR benefit; they are developed to increase profits for the provider at little (comparatively) risk to them, of course ! It's a business. Keep that in mind when considering them anywhere. I suppose I have been lucky with past AC units here and in other locations (Lennox & Trane), but all have lasted more than 15 years ! If the unit has multiple problems, maybe faulty or a "lemon" to begin with, the serious problems would show up in the first 5 years provided by the manufacturer I would think ! Like everything, depends on your individual circumstances regarding the $650 cost vrs. the possible benefit ?
