As part of the dumbing down of the US educational system, one of the first things eliminated was the study of civics—our responsibilities as a citizen and how the US government is supposed to work. I recall there being a civics unit in every grade through elementary and junior high schools. Other changes include the elimination, except for a few crucial points, of world history and geography, a superficial presentation of US history, the dropping of the ‘specials’ such as art, music, physical and driver education. The young sports players may be aware of their First Amendment right to free speech, but they never had the opportunity to learn civics!
One of my pet peeves in TV is seeing my peers, who likely had the same civics units I did, abusing the US Flag which they leave out 24/7, no matter what the weather, never lighted at night, and seeing it eventually getting frayed and even tattered. This is disrespect for the Flag. I would not be comfortable telling complete strangers what they are doing wrong in their Flag display....
