Our first house just south of 466A had a potassium based softener, which is better for your plants than sodium based. Also had small cartridge filters. I had no problem with scale but did not like the taste of the water.

Our current house by Savannah Center had no filter when we moved in and scale buildup in dishwasher. We contacted Nova and they said the calcium levels are low enough that a softener is not needed but the scale is made worse by particulate in the water. We installed their $599 filter system and it reduced the white scale buildup. Water tastes great.

As a chemical engineer I used a magnetic device trying to eliminate the scale in large evaporators. It consisted of wrapping wire around a 3 to 10 feet length of pipe and applying the proper frequency current. Pipe sizes were 2" to 24" diameter. It never worked for me in the 10 systems I tried it on. Cost was $3,000 to $20,000 based on the pipe size. The electrical cabinet was much bigger for the 24" pipe.
