I love animals and expect to interact with my friend's pets when I visit them. Not all guests to a home want animals locked away. So it isn't common sense to do so.
If I have contractors in my home, I ask if they are OK with dogs. If they say no, I would put the dogs outside for a short time in the fenced yard.
Most of my friends are animal lovers, and relaxed people. They know when they visit my home that my animals will be around. They also know they are welcome to bring their doggies for a visit any time.
Everyone has their own style of living. And so it is.
