Most people wear cotton masks and aerosol spray penetrates cotton. What you need is N95 or KN95 masks. The 95 refers to size of aerosol spray.

From what I have read about this subject, fumes are even smaller than aerosols. Fumes, such as perfume or gaseous odors are what I'm referring to.
When I wear a paper mask, purchased in a box of 50 or one of my cloth masks, I am unable to detect aromas from perfume, gas from my gas stove, foods, lav spray, pine sol cleaner, etc. As soon as I remove my mask, those aromas are very strong to me and very easily detected. I know that is an extremely unscientific test of the masks, but for some strange reason, I feel my masks are doing what I want them to do.
