I'd be shocked, too. I replaced mine a year ago through Mike Scott Plumbing and it was just under $1000. That was with a new expansion tank AND a $300 rebate from the gas company. My next door neighbor was charged a similar cost, but a friend who had his water replaced recently paid less than $800, and it was the same size tank. KEEP SEARCHING!
