Check out the site called troublefreepool.com. They have several good training documents that completely explain all of the factors that you need to measure in a pool and why, and the chemicals you need to balance your pool properly. It's far less work than you think, and you will have a better balanced and clearer pool than any pool company can deliver.
It will save you hundreds of $$'s a year, and takes about 15 minutes to test and add chemicals.
I use a robot to clean and scrub the walls.
