I run into this problem every day. I don't think it's just the guests trying to be polite. Many Villagers seem to not understand the rules. You're absolutely right about it creating a confusing and potentially serious problem. Sometimes it almost becomes a shouting match . . . "go ahead, no before me, no you go ahead, I insist, oh just get the hell out of my way". I'll bet some clever TOTVer could work up a fabulous comedy skit.
