The lights are not solar powered, they are powered by AC from a nearby receptacle. They also are "dual brightness" security lights in that they come on at dusk at half brightness (flood) and when they detect movement they rise to full brightness. If one chooses the wattage carefully the low brightness level will flood the area with dim light and surprise anyone who comes within the area with full brightness. The effect is that, from the inside of the home, someone detected a noise or movement outside and turned the lights on.
