It’s probably 1/2 pipe with pipe threads. As suggested if you can just turn off the pop up nozzle just do that. If the pops ups are in you’re road? dig down ( usually 4 to 6 inches), remove the pop up, and cap the 1/2 inch male pipe thread off with plastic cap.

Caps Available at Lowe’s, ace, or Home Depot which ever ones closes to you? I’ve blocked off several of mine, didn’t have to turn any water off, just shutoff the irrigation control if you think it may come on when you’re working on it?
