Give the guy a break. Frankly, what I worry more about is all the villagers wandering around with no masks like the pandemic is over. The truth is that if everyone had worn masks from the very beginning this would all be over. Ponder that for awhile.

That is the truth? And how do you know that is the truth? Did you see it written on stone tablets? Or did you hear it from the same man who said wearing masks would give a false sense of security and would be worse than no mask at all.....until he changed his mind?
Fauci is dealing with new information and sometimes has to change guidance based on that new information. Unfortunately, he seems to also be leveraging his reputation to attempt to drive public behaviors. "Fauci said" is heard more often than "Simon says" these days. In the case of the masks, he acknowledged that part of the reason for his initial message was to preserve masks for doctors - he was trying to drive our behavior. In the case of the number of vaccinations needed for herd immunity he acknowledged that he increased his estimate when he learned that more people were accepting the vaccine - it was off to a good start so he could shoot higher and attempt to get even more people on board.
I trust his expertise but I don't trust the man. I believe he knows his field but I suspect this virus is doing things he doesn't expect and he's struggling to understand it. When he talks about science he has credibility but when he attempts to sway public opinion and drive behaviors he loses it.
