The look in his eye captures the moment — although his eyes probably always look like that. According to the Cornell site (allaboutbirds.org) Great Blue Herons have exceptional night vision because they have a high number of rod-type photoreceptors allowing them to hunt day and night.
I am curious about how he won the battle. I assume with his talons and long neck, he could easily pull it off his beak. Is that what happened?
