Combination devices perform worse than discreet devices. Just because something is new or recent, does not mean it is better. If you provide me with the model number of your device, I will tell you if it's capable or a piece of garbage. I can tell you that if you didn't pay at least $175 for it, it's probably not a good one.
Your best bet is to get a gigabit capable cable modem (DOCSIS 3.0 or 3.1)and an AC1900 or better router. While you may never need or get gigabit service, you want these devices to be normally, figuratively filing their finger nails while slinging megabytes of data around. That way when there is high demand, they handle it while maintaining quality of service.
