signing up for USPS Informed Delivery has worked great. When you're expecting mail and don't receive it, you can go and ask the postal service worker (God forbid someone say "mailman") where the letter or package is. Likely it's in someone else's locker.
And when your neighbor comes to your door, asking where his/her mail is since it shows delivered to you, you can check your box and you'll find it. Last, there are the mail pieces that should be delivered and never makes it.
All of the above have happened to me, more than once. I love the USPS and in it's heyday was the very best. But I think it's taken funding cuts, etc and sometimes misses a beat.
