In 2006 Congress passed a law that required the USPS to fund it's retirement plan for the next 75 years in 10 years. No other federal organization or even private company it required to do that. Last year the head of the USPS removed high speed sorting machines, cut back hours and told employees to leave mail if it couldn't be delivered by the end of the shift.
WHY? The USPS is an independent organization not answerable to Congress, except by law. For years Congress has been wanting to get it's hands on the revenue from the USPS to spend on pet projects. If they can show that the USPS is not profitable the public may allow them to take over the USPS. If it wasn't for the 2006 law, the USPS would have been showing a profit all these years.
