I've been told by neighbors that it's OK until someone complains then The Villages take action. There have been threads on this site where after moving in, someone complained/reported about removing all the grass replacing with rocks in a patio villa and The Villages made them change it back. I personally know of someone this happened to.
If ya feel lucky, do it but be very friendly to all your neighbors present and future. Or call to verify.
