So no - Covid was definitely NOT the direct cause of many (maybe even most) of these deaths. But it was the direct cause of the pneumonia that rendered the body incapable of continuing to live.

Yep, I would agree with that - similar in some ways to AIDS - it's the weakened immune system that can no longer fight off the infection.
