I'm afraid that horse has long ago left the stall. SCOTUS' decisions over the years have basically ignored the original reason for the 2A (no standing military, so "militia's" needed them) and continues to try and be expanded by those who are in love and obsessed (rightfully called "ammosexuals") with their guns. The idea that weapons used for war are needed by civilians, to potentially fight a modern government military, is simply ludicrous and a red herring. I own a handgun, bolt-action hunting rifle and a shotgun, which is all anyone actually needs. It's hard to think any of the FF's agreeing with, or even imagining, what has happened - since they were alive.
