Assume the average rake per hand dealt is $4, plus $2 they take for the high hand promotion, plus another $1 for dealer tip, that's $7 per hand. If a dealer is able to deal 30 hands per hour (a reasonable assumption) that means that $210 is being taken off the table each and every hour you play, regardless of whether you are winning or losing against the other players.

I understand that I am gambling and I am OK with losing money. However, I'm not OK with being virtually guaranteed to lose money due to an excessive rake. I know lots of players really like the high hand promotions, but mathematically-speaking, it is a bad deal for players.

At least in Vegas and most other casinos, poker players earn comps based upon the total # of hours they play, as well as free drinks and often free food as well.

At Oxford Downs, they don't even offer players free water, soft drinks, or coffee! How much does a cup of coffee or a soft drink cost management--five or ten cents a cup?? That's just beyond cheap! And if the reason they don't offer free drinks is because they are forbidden by Florida State law to offer free drinks, that's fine, but they could sell drinks for a nickel or $0.25 or whatever. Same for cheap hot dogs, etc..

But unfortunately they don't have any competition in the area, so they don't have to.
Most Poker rooms in Vegas offer little to no comps. Unlike slots, roulette, craps etc, there is little house edge .. so something called a rake exists to pay for the dealers, the room etc. Poker is close to the least profitable game in the house. Most Indian run casinos in Florida (perhaps all) do not offer free drinks. Oxford runs a professional game. Cash and tournaments have a portion of either pots or entry fees that go to the house. Thats life. Very little difference if you travel to tampa to play at Seminole.

Its unfortunate that the OP raised an age old can or worms by trying to promote what must be his . hers penny ante Village game. Poker players in the Villages know where games are, and certainly dont need to go through another round of grief raised by gambling trolls. Bunko, Pokeno, Bingo and many other games in the Villages push small amounts of money around in the spirit of fun and camaraderie. Poker games do the same. There is no house rake, there is a maximum amount of money you can "lose", which in ALL the players opinions is nominal.

I would "wager" that there is more money exchanged on the golf courses than there is in all of the table games played in the rec centers. Let adults choose their pastimes and enjoy life. Thanks again OP for a very misplaced post.
