It means exactly what it says. If someone is hospitalized with the flu he is much more likely to die than from Covid. Another example is Ebola which if hospitalized has a mortality rate of 40%. Since you quoted hospitalizations I thought it would be informative to know how likely one were to die if hospitalized.

We have vaccines highly effective against Covid 95%+ but influenza vaccines are only 40% to 60% effective .
Many, many more people have been infected with Covid than the flu so the total number of death is higher this year. But the flu is more deadly.
