It's called Prepping. There is absolutely no problem with someone being prepared. Even the leaders go on TV every hurricane season and tell folks to prep. Sorry, but if it comes to a choice between feeding family or feeding those that did not prep, common sense says most folks will feed their families. If you start prepping ahead of time, the economy will not even notice products missing off the shelves and will remain stocked.
It's not survival of the fittest, it's survival of the smartest. Don't rely on others to pity you and share their rations when you do not think ahead. Communism only works on the conquered and enslaved. If you think that the community is going to force rationing of privately owned supplies, better get "prepped" for a fight.
That said, I do not believe the panic over an extended pandemic. Hospitals are filling up because many folks that put off surgery last year are now opting to get worked on now. Yes, infections may be up but deaths are not significantly increasing YET. A week long surge does not mean a trend. Panic at your own peril.
