I remember helping a neighbor dig one with a plastic shovel and pail (I was quite young). The problem was that even if you survived the immediate attack, you had to come out sometime, and the best case scenario was you emerged into a nuclear wasteland only to freeze to death in nuclear winter, playing your role in a mass extinction event.
