Older dinosaur wired telephone junction box has Jack connection. You could isolate the problem from the house or telephone line coming by unplugging the Jack in the junction box and plugging in telephone. If the telephone didn’t work then it wiring from house out or broke wire in the Jack box which I suspect in this case.
