Good Crossword! I only had a problem with 1 and 4 down.
Now back to accents If you ever come to England and visit the midlands, i.e. Birmingham, you will never, be able to understand a word that is said!! I have been to this city many times, and still do not understand the accent. We are told that their version of English is the original version!!
I was born and raised in the north on England, but migrated south to London aged 19 or so, different parts of London have different acents especially south (sarf) and west, the posh parts 
Also we do get a lot of American TV shows and films (movies) so I think our understanding of American accents and sayings is a little better.
Honestly most on our English TV dramas are rubbish.
