nONIE,
We've sold numerous houses over the years and I've always buried good ol' St. Joe. I was told, and always have, buried him upside down facing the direction we've wanted to move. I put the statue in a plastic baggie so it doesn't get wet or dirty.
Once you are in your new home, you are to place him in a place of importance. He always gets a nice spot in my kitchen, the heart of our house, usually on the window sill over my sink. In our present home, we don't have a window over the sink, so he's sitting on the countertop near the phone - a pretty good spot, all things considered.
I understand from others that now you can buy a 'kit' with the statue and instructions at Christian bookstores and the like. I don't know what the instructions will tell you to do, but the method I just explained has worked for us for over 35 years.
Good Luck!
