No, that is not true. You are free to do your own maintenance and non-warranty repair work, or have an independent mechanic do the work, and you will maintain your factory warranty. You, of course, need to keep records and receipts and use the correct parts. For example, if you do your own oil changes, you need to use oil with the correct weight and API rating. This is covered under the Magnuson-Moss Law. If the needed repair is a factory warranty issue, you should take it back to the dealer, obviously, because they will pay for it.
