You can pay me $20/hour for a cashier job at the supermarket, with full medical benefits and yearly dues at the local gym, company picnic, and monthly rewards. It won't make the job any easier to handle if the customers are abusive.
That's why people are leaving in droves. Customers are angrier than usual, they're expressing their anger more than usual, and the cashiers and other "front end" people have had it.

Retail workers and other workers do NOT just work for wages. Some like to leave the house and socialize and ALSO get paid for it. Humans are social animals - they like to have a tribe. That is why so many retired TV Landers play softball - they want to socialize in an organized, already set up manner and a TEAM gives them that. As does exercise clubs, social clubs, card clubs, bird watching and etc.
Many retail workers are inherently friendly. At least they start out that way. Generically, grumpy old men (and some women) can have their friendliness worn away over the years. Low wages that increase slower than the consumer price index (CPI) are also a factor that FORCES them out. No one stays there long enough to form lasting friends and teamwork. Part of the military success with retention is trying to build up teamwork and promising step-by-step promotion based on MERIT!
