What the columnist was saying is that McCarthy - almost in spite of himself - was closer to being right about the degree to which communists existed in government than wrong, given what we know today. That doesn't make McCarthy innocent of anything. He should always be judged on his behavior, and to my knowledge nothing has changed in that regard.

and there was no reason to give him any credit at all because many more people were on to communist penetration of different groups long before Joe did including my father who was branded one but wasn’t. The facts were that Joe actually never found a real party member whose was dangerous and probably didn’t care as long as he had press clippings to read while he drank his breakfast and lunch and he made finding them even harder in the 50’S because they went deeper underground
