Steve:

Basically you have to sever all ties to NYS. Bank and Brokerage accounts should be out of Fl. and make sure if you keep a house in NY you give up the STAR exemption. Obviously you have to change you voter registration and auto and drivers license.

BTW NYS will still consider you a resident even if you live out of state for 7 months, NYS may not agree with you, NYS requires a change in Domicile.

I did the research on google over a year ago so I don't have more details. But it is tricky enough that I will probably get advise from an Attorney in NY when time comes for us to change.
