Many people work in restaurants because the pay was good for what their knowledge base is. That said, you don't become a great waitress without a lot of time on the job. Hire someone that is clueless, you'll have poor service until they get proficient.
Everyone's job was and always will be essential. This mess was entirely man made.

Are you assuming that the average man/woman is inherently stupid and can't learn? Many times, if you go to Lowes and need assistance, the person that might be stocking the shelves will call someone with the knowledge to help you. Many learn from their customers also. I don't need a job, but if I did I would jump on that offer at Lowes in a heartbeat. Then again, I am not allergic to manual labor. I guess if my folks had bought me a car in high school, paid for insurance and fuel and gave me a substantial allowance, I would see no reason to take such a menial, low level job.
