You entire quote until the end was good advice. Sadly, the end lays the guilt for failure on the person trying to lose weight, and study after study shows it is not just a matter of making up your mind, as you suggest. There is many factors involved.
We are talking about a multi-billion dollar industry and if it was JUST a matter of making up your mind, there would be many success stories, as opposed to 85% failure rates.
You body is a very complex machine. The BEST advice anyone can give to someone else is to talk to your PCP and have then refer you to a nutritionist.
Losing 30 lbs in a short time (even a year) is wonderful, come back in 2 years and let us know if it stayed off. There is an 85% chance it won't.
I am NOT trying to be argumentative, I am in the same situation, and work with my doctor and nutritionist.
