I've been dragon boating for a very long time at every level of competition, I've literally seen the sport grow from 1 boat in the US to where it is today. The greatest thing about paddling a dragon boat is you don't need to have any experience to get in the boat. If you're new, sit in the very back of the boat so any bad timing won't impact anyone else. As you gain experience, move forward in the boat. It's phenomenal exercise! If you're super fit, pull hard. Not so fit, pull easy. Keep timing and no one can tell the difference how hard you're pulling. (well, someone with a lot of experience can tell but it's not important.) I strongly recommend older folks get out there and MOVE. Do some kind of physical activity, it will allow you to live longer, have a better quality of life in your old age. Paddling is a NON IMPACT sport. It doesn't hurt your knees or back. There are no jarring movements.
If you've ever paddled a canoe you can paddle a dragon boat. Don't let your fears about your physical condition or weight or lack of experience get in the way. Dragon Boats are very easily paddled and are very safe. Go out with an experienced team and they will have you paddling with confidence in one or two sessions.
Good luck.
