I own a smart phone but do not usually use it for purposes of digital copies.
Carry your original vaccine certificate the way you carry your original passport (and original driver's license). Losing these would be a problem. I carry the two together, in a "small purse/wallet on cloth strings" hung around my neck (like a necklace), and tucked into my belt so it is not usually visible.
Paper copies of Covid tests are accepted around the world.
I do not actually know if they would have accepted a paper copy of my vaccine card since I presented the original. I kind of doubt that they would have.
I've never had a problem with a paper copy of any other document when travelling.
You do not have to have a smart phone contract to take photos with a smart phone. So you could just buy a very cheap smart phone - maybe $15. Even such cheap phones have cameras.
However, I consider photos on my phone "back ups" since phones can be lost. I want paper copies as well, and keep the paper copies separate from my phone.
