I know of at least one case where someone did not have an MySSA account. Some random person in another state fraudulently set one up instead. That random person then directed the benefits be deposited another bank (same as having your checks mailed to them instead of you), and made use of the money. It took them a few months to sort it out and get things back to the way they were.

Caveat Emptor.
Ignorance can be painful.
Good security is neither cheap nor convenient.
