So, I'm wondering what the OP was going to do about the dropped gate card if the guard had opened the gate? Just drive off, leave it on the ground and order a new one? If OP was so far away from the button that OP couldn't reach out the window and push it, then OP had room to open the car door and retrieve the gate card and use it to open the gate.

While it is possible the gate pass was dropped onto the street, it is more likely that it was dropped inside the car as post #17 mentioned.
Post #21 gave the correct information that the gate person can open either gate from inside the booth. No need to leave the booth and go push the red button.
